Jointly organised by NUS MBA Social Impact and Sports Clubs, Futsal Fury 2009 saw teams from INSEAD and GE as finalists in a fundraising futsal match.
It was a crisp “Valentine’s Day” Saturday morning on February 14, 2009; but for the team of NUS MBA Social Impact Club, it was more than just Valentine’s day – it was a day when the club was going to host an event that would make a difference in some people’s lives. This event was a fund-raiser for a local Singapore hospital that serves patients suffering from HIV/AIDS.
NUS MBA blogger R. Suraj (class of 2008) shares the vision and founding story of the Social Impact Club NUS.
The Social Impact Club was an idea born in the heat of a Mumbai afternoon. A CSR club has existed within the NUS MBA but unfortunately it had remained dormant. When Adarsh and I met on that Mumbai afternoon, we shared the belief that we needed to revive the CSR club. Adarsh proposed that we start a Net Impact chapter at NUS, the first chapter within Singapore. Thus our journey began.
Paulo Coelho famously said, “When you really want something, the universe conspires in helping you achieve it.” Truer words were never spoken. Along our journey I met five others who gave their total commitment to the cause. These five – Debesh, Kashif, Kathrin, Vikram, Vivian, became the executive committee for the club. We found moral and financial support from the NUS MBA office. The Career Services Office helped us with contacts. Prof. Bob Fleming and Prof. Albert Teo became the club’s faculty advisors. Along the course, we built bridges with Insead Business School, which helped us in setting up the club. We also held a re-branding competition where we asked for new names for the club. The name ‘Social Impact Club’ was chosen from a bunch of equally good choices. Congrats to Kashif for getting the name right!
