Going Places

Student blogger Carissa shares about her MBA student exchange experience at UCLA Anderson school.

First of all, Happy New Year, friends!

I thought I wouldn’t get around to writing this final post, but here goes…

In my penultimate blog entry, I raved about the ‘year that was’- those first two semesters as NUS MBA students that at times felt slow and stressful (when we were swamped with projects, readings and exams—as the current batch would now know! 😉 but still, it was over too soon. Who wouldn’t want some more of those fun, memorable moments?

Career change? Be focused

Radhika, Class of 2007, talks about her exchange stint in HEC Paris, and making a career change post-MBA.

When I decided to pursue an MBA it was primarily to enable a career change, a move from Information Technology to Consumer Marketing. This was just a gut feeling though, something based on my passion for creativity, communications and the idea of “selling-ideas”. I knew that without hands-on experience in Marketing it was impossible to make a career-change unless I was willing to start from scratch. Being realistic I obviously did not want to start at the bottom again, compromising the 4+ years of work experience I had.

And so when I made it to the MBA programme at NUS Business School, I was intent upon specialising in Marketing. Everything I did in my two years at NUS was in one way or another driven by my goal to make this shift possible.

A Borderless Night: International day @ NUS

nus mba exchange international day

Preeti Adhikary, an NUS MBA exchange student from Vancouver, shares her experience about International Day 2009.

Why do people come to Singapore on exchange? To travel, to learn about Asian cultures and to escape the cold are all logical answers. My reason is a bit personal and different. As an Asian who had spent many years in North America, I needed to reacquaint myself with Asia and Singapore seemed like the perfect location. However, charting unfamiliar territory is not always fun. Coming to a classroom full of strangers and sitting alone at lunch are not the experiences I had envisioned. After juggling mixed feelings and undergoing withdrawal symptoms, I finally decided to try to mingle and attend a social event. In hindsight, I realize this decision was the turning point of my exchange experience. As corny as it sounds, I feel at home at NUS now.

Germany has always been one of my favourite countries and a place I’ve always wanted to visit. Needless to say, when I found out about the opportunity to go for a summer exchange at the WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management in Koblenz, Germany; I jumped at the chance to experience German life. The programme entitled “The Changing Environment for International Business in Europe”, centered around introducing students to the business environment in Europe and included visits to German companies and the European Central Bank.

Summer Graduate Programme – Norway

summer graduate programme norway

Fatma Iskandar from the Class of 2010 shares her experiences at the summer graduate programme in Norway.

During my first semester at NUS, I was planning to go for an exchange programme. However, I wasn’t too keen on a semester long exchange. It was then that I saw Zahira’s email informing us of the summer exchange programme to Norway. A 2 week summer program was just what I was looking for. And so without further delay, I grabbed this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and applied for the programme. The partner school (NHH) was located in Bergen, the second biggest city in Norway after Oslo, with a population of 250,000.
