In today’s competitive environment, starting a business and sustaining it can be a daunting process. Getting it to succeed is an even bigger challenge. With that in mind, Global Alumni Network Office (GANO), NUS Business School, took the opportunity to invite alumni Marcus Tan (BBA 2011), Co-founder of Carousell, and Bryan Lee (BBA 2010), Co-founder of Intraix and Bike Roger, to the third edition of the Mind My Business networking series to share their entrepreneurial journeys with their award-winning companies.
Spirits were high as alumni mingled over cocktails, catching up with old friends and networking with each other. Carrie Chan (BBA 1987) and Teo Sien Lee (MBA 1992) liked that the event gave them the opportunity to learn from the young entrepreneurs. Shared Carrie: “With so many upcoming trends, it can be hard to keep up. Attending these events allows me to gain insights on new channels of marketing to reach the youths of today.”
Current student Lionel Tan also appreciated the tips presented in the presentation as well as the benefits of networking: “As a young entrepreneur, their experiences are so relevant to what my partner and I are experiencing right now, and the advice shared definitely helps! Additionally, I managed to meet Andrew, a fellow student, who coincidentally is in the same industry of education and training as I am.”
After attendees had sampled the sumptuous buffet dinner, the host for the evening, Allan Teng, current BBA student and Co-founder and Chairman of 8packs, invited Marcus and Bryan up on stage. The two successful entrepreneurs delivered a highly inspiring session as they spoke of the many challenges they faced while starting up their businesses and how they overcame them to accomplish what they have today.
Hot topics for the Q&A session that followed included the secrets to success and the qualities aspiring entrepreneurs must possess. Ms Ng Pheck Choo, Director of GANO, then presented Marcus, Bryan and Allan with tokens of appreciation.
Attendees stayed on to network with fellow alumni even after the sharing session had come to a close, exchanging perspectives and trading insights. Cheo Bee Bin (BBA 1986) found the event interesting and informative, adding that she learnt a lot from the speakers. Agreeing, Shaun Tan, a current Law and Business student, said: “Not only is the food good and the place great, I got to meet like-minded people and gained a lot of inspiration. I’ll definitely attend future events and will encourage my friends to do the same!”
Mind My Business, an initiative of the Global Alumni Network Office, is a networking platform for alumni of NUS Business School who are entrepreneurs or business owners or are aspiring to be. Through this collaborative platform, alumni are encouraged to support one another through the sharing of experiences, knowledge, contacts and opportunities.
