Where: Shangri-la Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Taipei
When: 13 December 2008
Taiwan-based alumni have a reason to celebrate now that the NUS Business School has a chapter up and running there.
The chapter held its investiture at the Shangri-la Far Eastern Plaza Hotel in Taipei on December 13. The guest-of-honor was His Excellency Mr Vincent Siew, the Vice-President of Taiwan. About 140 people turned up for the event, which was hosted by Prof Bernard Yeung, the Dean of the NUS Business School. Also present were Mr Gordon Chan, the former Labor Minister, and Mr Stanley Loh, the Singapore Trade Representative to Taiwan.
In his speech, Prof Yeung recalled how the idea of forming a Taiwan Alumni Chapter had originated back in 2004. He commended all the office bearers for their dedication, and emphasized how such alumni were “our front line” and “best resource for our School.”
Mr Siew spoke about how education was central in boosting any economy. He pointed out that educating citizens was something that thriving economies do, as education addresses four economic fundamentals — developing and attracting local and foreign intellectual capital, instilling integrity, encouraging innovation, and tapping on the integrative synergy of multiple talents.
He also recounted his own personal memories of Singapore, recalling his visits to the city-state.
After he spoke, Prof Lan Luh Luh, Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies, invited the office bearers to go on stage to pledge to do their best for the chapter. Prof Yeung then gave out plaques to each member of the executive committee. This was followed by a group photo taking session with Mr Siew.
The members of the executive committee are:
- President, Huang Ying-Jing (APEX-C MBA 2002)
- Supervisor, Chiu Jin-Yi (APEX-C MBA 2003)
- Vice-President, Huang Shi-Hsien (APEX-C MBA 2003)
- Director, Yang Chew-Ing (MBA-C 1998)
- Director, Hsu Fu-Jung (APEX-C MBA 2003)
- Director, Kao Jui-Hsin (APEX-C MBA 2007)
- Secretary-General, Chen Huan-Hung (APEX-C MBA 2002)
- Assistant Secretary-General, Kuo Hsing-Chi (APEX-C MBA Student)
The chapter got off to a good start with the Alumni-E MBA Summit that was held earlier that day. Prof Duan Jin-Chuan, the Cycle and Carriage Professor of Finance at the NUS Business School, and Prof Chen Song-Nan, Professor of Financial Engineering and Financial Economics of the National Chengchi University spoke about exotic financial instruments and how these contributed to the collapse of financial markets around the world. They also looked at whether innovative financial products could also be part of the solution, rather than just being part of the problem. More than 60 people attended the forum.
Members of the Taiwan chapter also enjoyed an exclusive visit to the renowned Taiwanese restaurant, Din Tai Fung and the internationally acclaimed fashion label Shiatzy Chen. the visits were hosted by the respective owners, Mr Warren Yang Chi Hua and Ms Wang Chen Tsai Hsieh. All in all, a good start for Taiwanese-based alumni.
