140 golfers teed off at the Laguna National Golf & Country Club on 19 November 2008.

However, after 10 holes, organizers were forced to cancel the tournament as the rain made it impossible for the tournament to carry on.

Nevertheless, members of the alumni as well as sponsors and donors of the golf challenge took the opportunity to have fun catching up and mingling with one another.

When night fell, the party reunited at the ballroom for the dinner reception. All in all there were 200 guests, including golfers, donors and sponsors turned up for the dinner.

Guest-of-Honor Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth & Sports opened the evening on a light-hearted note.

“But we have a more important agenda here tonight: to get alumni involved,” he highlighted. “The future of the School depends on whether the alumni feel a connection enough to contribute. This will translate into support for the NUS brand.”

In his opening speech, Professor Bernard Yeung, Dean of NUS Business School thanked the Minister for gracing the event.

“I also want to extend our gratitude to sponsors and donors of today’s golf challenge,” he said. “I feel very touched that donors are still opening their pockets to us despite the bad times.”

Mr Steve Tan (BBA Hons 2007) was a part of the organizing committee this year. He said that he felt that it was a natural progression as he helped out last year as a student and wanted a more active role this year as an alumnus.

When asked about the success of the event, Mr Tan replied, “The rain is part and parcel of the game. The important point is that everyone had fun and we are doing this for a good cause.”

The proceeds of the challenge will go to the development of a new school building in NUS Business School and the Centre for Social Entrepreneur and Philanthropy (CSEP).

A prominent donor, Dr Robert Yap (BBA 1976), Chairman and CEO of YCH Group brought along two friends to take part in this challenge because it was a fundraiser. “It was a pity it had to end earlier than expected, but at least we got to play half the game.”

The annual golf challenge was initiated last year. It has successfully raised S$180,000 this year. The amount raised is matched dollar-for-dollar by the Singapore government, which brings this year’s amount to over S$360,000.

Mr Simon Phua (BBA Hons 1976), the Chairman of the organizing committee felt really proud of his fellow alumni members for contributing so generously.

“90 percent of the donors and sponsors from last year also participated and donated this year. This is very heartening to know.”

Mr Phua also encouraged the golfers to look forward to another golf challenge next year.
